Three Forms, One Value: Fraction, Decimal & Percent Conversions
Fractions, decimals, and percentages are three different ways to express the same quantity — 1/2, 0.5, and 50% all represent exactly half. Being able to convert fluently among these forms is essential for comparing values, interpreting data, calculating discounts, and solving real-world problems across math, science, and everyday life.
Components of Conversions
This section covers the six conversion pathways:
- Fraction to Decimal: Divide the numerator by the denominator.
- Decimal to Fraction: Read the decimal using place value, write it as a fraction, and simplify.
- Fraction to Percent: Convert the fraction to a decimal, then multiply by 100 and add the % sign.
- Percent to Fraction: Write the percent over 100 and simplify.
- Decimal to Percent: Multiply the decimal by 100 (move the point two places right) and add %.
- Percent to Decimal: Divide by 100 (move the point two places left).
Examples of Conversions
Fraction to Decimal Examples
- Convert 3/4 to a decimal: Divide 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75.
- Convert 1/3 to a decimal: Divide 1 ÷ 3 = 0.333... (a repeating decimal, often rounded to 0.33).
- Convert 7/8 to a decimal: Divide 7 ÷ 8 = 0.875.
Decimal to Fraction Examples
- Convert 0.6 to a fraction: 0.6 = 6/10, which simplifies to 3/5.
- Convert 0.125 to a fraction: 0.125 = 125/1000, which simplifies to 1/8 (divide by 125).
- Convert 0.45 to a fraction: 0.45 = 45/100, which simplifies to 9/20 (divide by 5).
Fraction to Percent Examples
- Convert 4/5 to a percent: 4 ÷ 5 = 0.8, then 0.8 × 100 = 80%.
- Convert 1/8 to a percent: 1 ÷ 8 = 0.125, then 0.125 × 100 = 12.5%.
- A student answers 17 out of 20 questions correctly. Convert 17/20: 17 ÷ 20 = 0.85, so the score is 85%.
Percent to Fraction Examples
- Convert 25% to a fraction: 25/100 simplifies to 1/4.
- Convert 66% to a fraction: 66/100 simplifies to 33/50.
- A store offers 40% off. As a fraction, 40/100 simplifies to 2/5, meaning you save 2 out of every 5 dollars.
Decimal to Percent Examples
- Convert 0.72 to a percent: 0.72 × 100 = 72%.
- Convert 0.05 to a percent: 0.05 × 100 = 5%.
- A batting average of 0.315 converts to 31.5%, meaning the player gets a hit about 31.5% of at-bats.
Percent to Decimal Examples
- Convert 60% to a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6.
- Convert 8.5% to a decimal: 8.5 ÷ 100 = 0.085.
- A savings account earns 3.25% interest. As a decimal, 3.25 ÷ 100 = 0.0325, used in calculations like $1,000 × 0.0325 = $32.50.
